Raw Citrine versus Heated Citrine: Their Unique Energies and Uses

Citrine, known for its sunlit yellow hues, is one of the most popular stones for attracting abundance, joy, and positive energy. However, not all Citrine is the same: some are natural (or "raw"), while others are created by heat-treating Amethyst or Smoky Quartz to achieve a vibrant yellow or orange color. These two types of Citrine not only look different but also carry distinct energetic qualities that can make a difference in your crystal practice.

In this post, we’ll explore the differences between natural Citrine and heat-treated varieties, delve into the metaphysical properties each can offer, and I’ll share my personal experiences working with both types of this powerful gemstone.

What’s the Difference? Natural Citrine vs. Heat-Treated Amethyst

Natural Citrine:
Natural Citrine is relatively rare, with a softer, more subtle yellow hue that can range from pale lemon to smoky yellow or greenish tones. It is typically formed in nature under specific conditions that allow quartz to develop a natural golden color. This type of Citrine resonates with a pure, grounded energy that’s known to stabilize the Solar Plexus Chakra, enhancing self-confidence and encouraging steady, balanced manifestation.

Heat-Treated Citrine:
By contrast, the bright yellow or orange Citrine seen in most stores is often heat-treated Amethyst or Smoky Quartz. This process involves heating purple or smoky quartz to high temperatures, resulting in that intense yellow color associated with Citrine. While visually appealing, heat-treated Citrine’s energy can differ slightly from natural Citrine due to its transformation process. Some crystal collectors avoid the heated version completely, but many crystal enthusiasts still enjoy working with this stone for abundance, joy, and Solar Plexus Chakra stimulation.

Healing Properties: Does It Make a Difference?

The difference between these two types of Citrine goes beyond appearance; it’s also felt in their energies. Here’s a look at the specific healing benefits each can offer:

  • Natural Citrine: Known for its self-cleansing properties, natural Citrine is said to hold a steady, grounding energy that can be ideal for those who want consistent, long-term support for their Solar Plexus Chakra. Many people appreciate its ability to maintain a calm, abundant energy without needing frequent recharging or cleansing. Natural Citrine is also associated with endurance, making it an excellent choice for those seeking to attract prosperity without the burnout that can sometimes accompany intense energy work.

  • Heat-Treated Citrine: This variety often carries a more vibrant, stimulating energy. Many users find that it energizes the Solar Plexus and connects with higher chakras as well, particularly the Third Eye and Crown Chakras. This fusion can create a dynamic, joy-bringing energy but may sometimes feel intense or even overstimulating for those sensitive strong energies. Heat-treated Citrine can be a wonderful ally for short-term, high-energy situations, like manifestation work or clearing creative blocks.

My Personal Experience: Raw vs. Heated Citrine

In my own work with Citrine, I’ve found that each type has a distinct personality. Both are effective for working with the Solar Plexus and attracting abundance, but they resonate quite differently for me.

  • Heated Citrine tends to have a brighter, more joyous energy. It’s great for lifting my mood and creating a sense of optimism, but its vibration can also feel a bit fragile or “buzzy.” I’ve noticed that it has a stimulating effect on higher chakras, which can sometimes lead to overstimulation in my Solar Plexus if I wear it for long stretches. It’s as if this Citrine variety is “burning bright,” bringing a rush of energy that works well for short bursts of focus or creativity.

  • Natural Citrine (or “Raw” Citrine, as I like to call it) feels more grounded and steady. I find it easier to wear for extended periods without feeling overstimulated. It seems to offer a gentler, sustaining energy for abundance and prosperity—almost like attracting good things without overexertion. Because my Solar Plexus is an area I treat with extra care, natural Citrine’s energy feels like it supports this chakra without overwhelming it, which makes it my preferred choice for long-term wear.

That said, each person’s experience will be unique, so it’s essential to experiment with both types to see how they resonate with your energy and needs.

How to Tell the Difference: Is It Citrine or Heat-Treated Quartz?

Identifying whether a Citrine is natural or heat-treated can be tricky, but there are a few clues:

  • Color Consistency: Natural Citrine generally has a uniform yellow tone throughout the crystal. In contrast, heat-treated Amethyst or Smoky Quartz often shows patches of white or translucent areas where the heat treatment hasn’t transformed the color entirely.

  • Intense Yellow or Orange Hues: Citrines that are intensely yellow or orange are likely heat-treated, as natural Citrine rarely occurs in these bright tones.

  • Source Transparency: If you’re purchasing a Citrine for its metaphysical properties, ask the seller about its origin and whether it’s natural or heat-treated.
