An Introduction to Jade

Jade is one of the most loved gems in the world, having been worn as a talisman by millions throughout time. It is most closely associated with Asian cultures, having been fashioned into jewelry, sacrificial vessels, and other sacred objects, with artifacts dating as far back as 7,000 years ago. Jade was, and still is, treasured as a stone for bringing long-term success and protection.

In 1863, French mineralogist Alexis Damour discovered that the gemstone known as Jade was actually two different compounds with different chemical structures.

Nephrite, a silicate of calcium and magnesium, is the form of Jade found in China. It can also be found in other places across the globe, including the western United States and Canada. The term Nephrite comes from the Greek for “kidney stone” because of the belief that this gemstone can help cure that ailment. Besides it’s green hue, Nephrite Jade can also be found in a pale yellow or almost white hue, often called Mutton Fat Jade. This color variant is due to higher quantities of magnesium within the stone.

Jadeite is slightly harder than Nephrite Jade, due to it’s sodium aluminum silicate structure. It can be found in Southeast Asia, Europe, Canada and beyond. It also has a history within South American cultures, including use by Mayans. Jadeite can be intensely green and translucent. It can also be apple green, blue green, nearly white, pink, and lavender. Jadeite is generally considered the rarer and more expensive form of Jade.

Another green gemstone, Serpentine, is often confused with Jade. Serpetine appears in several shades of green and even yellow, known, confusingly, as Yellow Jade. Serpentine is known for attracting Abundance and increasing calm confidence.
