Onyx

An Introduction to Onyx

The name Onyx derives from the Greek word for “claw” or “fingernail.” If you are most familiar with Black Onyx, this might be confusing. But the abundant cream and white variety of onyx consists of veining that closely resembles the colors of a fingernail. Onyx is a type of Chalcedony, being part of the “banded” or '“layered” branch of the chalcedony family.

Onyx resembles, and can often be confused for marble or granite. All are used frequently used for decor, countertops, sinks, and more. One distinguishing feature, however, is Onyx’s translucency, which allows light to pass through the stone much more easily than the more opaque marble and granite.

Onyx may also be confused for banded Calcite, another member of the Chalcedony family. The easiest way to tell the difference is by testing their Mohs hardness. Onyx is much higher on the scale (6.5-7) vs. Calcite’s 3. So Onyx is much more difficult to scratch and can actually be used to scratch Calcite.

Onyx takes on various color shades, ranging from cream to pink, brown, black red and green, and even clear with white banding. Onyx can be found in Uruguay and in certain regions of Brazil, Afghanistan, India, Madagascar, Peru and the US. There was a time where Baja California and the northwestern part of Mexico was a major source for onyx, until cheap imitations began to appear on the market.

This mesmerizing stone was considered a prized possession for goddesses and queens. Even Cleopatra kept this stone near her, as she believed that Onyx provided potent protective powers. It is believed in ancient Indian stories that Onyx provided protection from evil and disharmony, and aided with stability and balance, especially within relationships.

It’s no secret that Onyx is widely known for its protective properties and attracting good fortune. In fact, many black stones similar to Black Onyx, provide that powerful protection against anything that could cause you harm. Onyx has been used as an amulet to ward off negative energies.

Onyx is a great stone for helping you remain grounded in your body, mind, and soul. If you’re needing a boost in creative thinking and getting in tune with your inner self, onyx is a perfect stone for that too!
