Pyrite
An Introduction to Pyrite
Pyrite is an iron disulfide mineral, which you may have heard referred to as fools gold. It is actually the most abundant of the sulfide minerals, which also include Cinnabar and Galena. The name Pyrite comes from the Greek word pyr (“fire”) because striking Pyrite against metal can cause sparks to fly. In fact, Pyrite was used in early firearms to ignite the gunpowder. Today, Pyrite is used in some batteries brands because of its semi-conductive properties.
The largest deposits of Pyrite are in Spain and Italy, and it is also mined across the United States.
