Turquoise

An Introduction to Turquoise

Turquoise is one of our most popular American gemstones. Though it can be found in other parts of the world, in the U.S. we associate it most with southwestern style, color palettes, and traditions.

Turquoise is actually one of the first gemstones known to man. Prized by Egyptian and Aztec cultures thousands of years ago, Turquoise is now mined all over the world. It is used for increasing strength as vitality, as well as providing protection to the wearer, as far back as the ancient Egyptian amulets.

Turquoise is formed when water passes through aluminous rock where copper and other minerals are present. Chemical reactions within the mineral deposits create the famous turquoise color.

Because of the popularity of this vibrant gem, many fake versions have been created throughout our modern era. Besides fakes made from plastic and other man made materials, another commonly mislabeled “turquoise” is actually Howlite, dyed to create that bright turquoise hue.

Other blue and greens tones with similar healing properties are often sold as Turquoise, even though they aren’t actually related.

African Turquoise is one example. A beautiful healing stone in its own right, it is not actually Turquoise. It is a speckled green and black Jasper found in Africa, sometimes left untreated, as in our jewelry pieces, but often treated to simulate the tones of true Turquoise. Similar to true Turquoise, it contains inclusions such as copper and iron, creating veins and mottling within the stone. African Turquoise is used for personal transformation, helping the wearer to awaken to their highest spiritual purpose.

A few other famous places Turquoise is found:

Hubei Turquoise is from the Hubei province in Northern China. Two of the finest mines in the Hubei province are the Yungai, which means, "a mountain covered with cloud" and the Zhuxi "a mountain where growing plenty of bamboo".

Kingman Turquoise is found in Kingman Arizona. This is one of the major American Turquoise sources.

Elisa Turquoise is mined from the Sonora mines in Mexico. These stones have unique green pigmentation when compared to other nearby turquoise mines, filled with the blue hued stone.

Because Turquoise is such a soft stone, it is often stabilized before use in jewelry pieces, in order to make it stronger and more long lasting. This beautiful pendant was designed by combining small turquoise stones and creating a composite with the addition of metallic inclusions, resulting in a truly one-of-a-kind creation.
