Agate

An Introduction to Agate

Agate is one of many varieties of Chalcedony, often identified by its multi-colored, curved or concentric bands. It is also more translucent than most other varieties of the chalcedony family. For centuries, its beautiful colors and patterns made Agate a highly prized gem. It has been discovered with artifacts from cultures of the Neolithic Period, also known as the Stone Age, occurring 10,000 years ago. Other types of agate include: Dendritic, Crazy Lace, Botswana, Druzy, Geode, Moss, and Blue Lace.

Dendritic Agate comes from the greek term for “having a branched form resembling a tree.” These tree like patterns can be found throughout the stone, which comes in many varieties of color.

Crazy Lace Agate is named for its swirling and circular patterns. Crazy Lace Agate is often dyed to produce colors that do not naturally occur in the stone, but untreated specimens can be found as well.

Agate Geode occurs when the stone forms surrounding a hollow cavity. Often this cavity surface becomes lined with tiny crystals, creating a Druzy, such as in our Agate Druzy Slice Necklaces.

As a result, this created the highly defined parallel bands found in Botswana Agate, usually white on hues of brown, gray, pink, tan, apricot and purplish red.
